OPHELIA

Hamlet and Ophelia in Kozintsev's "Hamlet", 1964

Ghosts ugly and white
howling, haunt my darkest nightmares
Tormented black ruins
is all my heart in sorrow bystares.
So pale and still floats my dearest Ophelia
among the nenuphars.

Towers grown old
that cast their savage shadows on me.
Castles of past
and their proud chest of stoneness.
Remnants of damned and tortured souls engraved within them
standing in front of me!!

Oh crystal eyes
so innocently looking at me,
if you don’t see me
still eternally you love me!
Hard drops of rain and ricochets of frozen whirlwinds
please say good night to her!!

And take me away from this by god forsaken dark place
that can't be touched at all by summer's warming embrace
take me away with all your last remaining fury
from seeing her going down to earth’s great depths, so lurid.

A POETIC ATTEMPT IN GREEK, ON SHAKESPEARE'S OPHELIA'S CHARACTER BY CONSTANTINE TAOULAS
